Introduction to project
Ecology is the study of the relationships between living things and their environment. When Sculptor Jackie Brookner began working with water in 1995, she was unable to convince people there was a water problem. Today it is all too obvious that water around the world is under threat. For us to move from devastation of the planet to rich regeneration demands the way we as humans think. The poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, suggests “the artist’s task is to imprint the temporary earth into ourselves so deeply and passionately that it can rise again inside us."
"The Being of Human" - Project Description
This six week class (total of 24 hours) fuses together basic ecological principles with artistic endeavours. It will serve as the foundation for an inquiry into the relationships between self and the natural world. As artists we can work with new materials that are made entirely from natural and/or recycled resources. This module will introduce students to a more sustainable way of working with art materials. Students begin the course by makking their own paper (for use during study course). Students will also learn about different types of paints we can make from locally sourced pigments. As capstone experience, each particiapnt in the course will be challenged to research and produce one art material that replaces a commercial product.
