"I could spend my life arriving each evening in a new city” Bill Bryson

Eight years ago when I decided to embark on an international teaching career, I don't think I quite grasped the endless opportunities that awaited me. Taking the plunge to live and work in a foreign country is a unique experience that I would encourage anyone thinking about it, to give it a go. It provides insights into a country that isn’t your own. It exposes you to a different culture. It allows you to learn a new language, meet new people, and get a new perspective on the world. As a teacher, there are many avenues open to you and you have the opportunity to use your qualifications to take you to all corners of the world.

Many people ask me how do you get a teaching job on the international circuit? Eight years ago I began my search online at www.tes.com. The TES website has the largest selection of academic, education and teaching job vacancies for primary schools, secondary schools and special needs schools in the UK and Internationally. You can search by country or by subject area. Please note, that these are professional teaching jobs and you will need to hold an education degree to apply for these jobs. The international schools that advertise on TES tend to follow the British Curriculum (primary is KS1 and KS 2, secondary IGCSE and A Levels).

Many teachers find their way on to the international circuit via international job fairs. Search Associates is one the leading recruiting agency for international teachers. On registering with the agency each candidate is teamed up with a Senior Associate who are able to offer advice and assistance in your job search. Job fairs are held annually from November to April in various locations around the world. The London job fair held in January is one of the largest, attracting over 150 schools each year. It is important to note that the job fairs are by invitation only and a candidate must be registered with Seach Associates. In their video below, Search Associates explain a little more about the process.

Seach Associates are not the only big players in the international teaching game. Other reputable agencies include Council of International Schools (COIS) which is also membership community providing professional services to both school, higher education institutions and job seekers. Also International School Services (www.iss.edu) is one of the first to offer an iFair in March each year, allowing ISS recruiting schools and teachers seeking a position in an international school the opportunity to connect online.
